Lead, cadmium, mercury and inorganic arsenic are contaminants for which EU law sets maximum levels in many food categories, with stricter limits for foods intended for infants and young children. They can enter food from soil, water and air or through contact with equipment and packaging, so both producers and importers check for them.
What we test
We determine the regulated heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic) and other elements of interest as contaminants, such as tin (relevant for food in metal cans), chromium and nickel. For nutrition labelling and compositional control we also measure minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese.
The technique depends on the element and the concentration range: flame atomic absorption (FAAS) for major elements, graphite furnace (GFAAS) for trace lead, cadmium and chromium, hydride generation (HGAAS) for arsenic and cold vapour (CVAAS) for mercury. For mercury in water we use atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Solid samples are digested before analysis according to the applicable standards.
Regulatory framework
- Regulation (EU) 2023/915 on maximum levels for certain contaminants in food
- Directive (EU) 2020/2184 on water intended for human consumption
- Directive 2002/32/EC on undesirable substances in animal feed
How we work
Tell us the product and the elements you need, and we will recommend the appropriate method. Results are issued in a test report; accredited tests are marked as such and are listed in the RENAR annex to accreditation certificate LI 871.

"RENAR accredited" links to the matching row of the accredited-tests table below (RENAR annex no. 1/24.04.2026); "authorised, not accredited" means authorised by ANSVSA (authorisation no. 95/24.09.2025) but outside the accreditation; "subcontracted" means performed by a partner laboratory. An analysis with two labels is accredited only for the matrices and methods in the table. "Not accredited" (non-food products, which need no authorisation) means performed in the ICA laboratory or by a partner laboratory, outside the accreditation.
This list is not exhaustive and not all determinations are accredited. For anything not listed here, please contact our sales team.
