Tobacco is not a food, but it goes through a production chain comparable to that of other agricultural products: growing with plant protection treatments, curing, fermentation, storage and processing. The quality and conformity of tobacco leaf and derived products can be checked in the laboratory using techniques that ICA R&D also applies to food control.
What we test
For raw and processed tobacco we can determine basic physico-chemical parameters such as moisture, ash and pH, which affect behaviour in storage and processing. Using the chromatographic and spectrometric techniques available in the laboratory we can analyse pesticide residues and metals. Microbiological tests, for example yeasts and moulds, are useful for assessing storage conditions.
Tests specific to tobacco products, such as measuring nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide emissions, require dedicated equipment and methods. Please contact us so that we can agree which tests can be carried out for your product.
Regulatory framework
- Directive 2014/40/EU on the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products
Limits for residues and contaminants in tobacco are set, as applicable, by the customer’s specification or by the requirements of the destination market.
How we work
Samples should be sent in closed packaging that preserves their moisture. Before shipment we discuss the purpose of the testing and the methods available, and then send you a quotation. Results are issued in a test report. Tobacco testing is not currently part of the laboratory’s RENAR accreditation scope.
Parameters and determinations
Physico-chemical parameters
- Moisture not accredited
- Ash not accredited
- pH not accredited
Contaminants
- Pesticide residues not accredited
- Metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg) not accredited
Microbiology
- Yeasts and moulds not accredited
"RENAR accredited" links to the matching row of the accredited-tests table below (RENAR annex no. 1/24.04.2026); "authorised, not accredited" means authorised by ANSVSA (authorisation no. 95/24.09.2025) but outside the accreditation; "subcontracted" means performed by a partner laboratory. An analysis with two labels is accredited only for the matrices and methods in the table. "Not accredited" (non-food products, which need no authorisation) means performed in the ICA laboratory or by a partner laboratory, outside the accreditation.
This list is not exhaustive and not all determinations are accredited. For anything not listed here, please contact our sales team.
